Amazing afternoon on the water yesterday 😃 so hot I had to abandon any idea of getting work done and so I packed up the van and headed to Wembury. Paddleboarded over to the Mew Stone for a little snorkel 🤿.

The kelp over there is really fantastic. So many blue rayed limpets (photo 4), a few fish and one huge spider crab which I failed to get a photo of!

On the way over I spotted a few jellyfish, we start to see them when the water warms up, mostly moon but the odd compass (like in photo 7). Then round the back of the mewstone there was a patch of loads, must have been how the tide and wind were working together they had all ended up here, so many species! Jellyfish get such a bad rap but most of those we see are harmless, some don’t sting at all and those that do it’s very mild like a nettle sting. And they won’t sting through anything, so if you’re wearing a wetsuit or even shorts and a rash vest it leaves only small areas you can be stung on.

A swim on the way back to cool down and some time spent sitting on the board reflecting as to how grateful I am to be able to do this and to live in such a beautiful spot, with cup of tea of course! Before heading back to the beach (and the crowds).

All walks are all fully guided with me, a highly experienced wild swimming and outdoor professional. I’ve been leading groups for over 20 years and create a relaxed and supportive environment for all. You’ll get all the information you need in advance, so you can relax on the day knowing you have everything you need and exact details on where to park!

Swim or dip to suit you, there’s no pressure, just some really special places for you to enjoy! Plenty of time for breaks, snacks and taking in the views. Walks will be at the pace of the group.

I have just found out it is Devon Day 🥳 and so I thought I’d take this opportunity to share some photos of lovely Devon! I have lived here in Devon for over 20 years and have been luckily enough to have explored much, but not all, of it.

One of the things I love about Devon is the variety, from the vast expanse of Dartmoor, to the beautiful Coastline, north and south to the amazing city’s and urban spaces. We’ve got so much and I feel really grateful to call Devon my home!

Wonderful Wild Swimming Walk today to Tavy cleave! News flash, it’s not always sunny 😮, however it is always amazing 🤩 ! Just such a beautiful river at every turn, rain or shine! We managed to avoid most of the boggy bits and had a glorious time swimming in this fantastic pool! 14 degrees in the pool today apparently, balmy!

We then headed up the valley pointing at all the other lovely spots we could have a dip in! We headed up the top and into the cloud, lunch in the group shelter, cause we could and then back to the cars via Ger Tor. While I love the sun as much as the next person, a little rain is not a problem when you’re well prepared.

Fantastic Wild Swimming Walk to Crazywell Pool today, we were even joined by some ponies, luckily we’d finished with the swimming by the time they arrived and were enjoying our lunch!

Plenty of sunshine, great company, lots of laughs and even a bit of scrambling to end the day! Smiles all round 😁!

Little swim towards the end of day 1 on my coastal walk in the beautiful little hamlet of Penberth. Even though it was a fairly cloudy day, I had done about 18km by this point and I was very hot 🥵. So to get into the water and cool down was such a relief! Once I got past the seaweed I was out on top of the sand and in the beautiful turquoise waters of Cornwall.

Once I’d dried off, repacked my rucksack and was setting off to find a spot for the evening I felt so refreshed and reinvigorated, like I could carry on for miles 🥾. That’s the power of this cold water swimming malarkey 😁. It’s not just a beautiful thing to do it can also serve a purpose.

Penzance to St Ives on the South West Coast Path, what an amazing 4 days 😍. I suspected it would be quite special but it really was phenomenal and I wanted to take this opportunity to shout out to and thank @southwestcoastpath for making this possible. The last 4 days has really made me realise the work that goes into maintaining a path like this in such an extreme and ever changing environment. From the thoughtful signs, to the numerous bridges and crossing points, to the work that’s gone into making boggy sections passable and redirecting the route to keep us all safe, it’s a really incredible effort and one I’m so unbelievably grateful for 🙏.

It was also amazing to see so many people out and about enjoying it. One of the highlights was definitely the people I met along the way. From those who simply nodded and said hello to those I stopped and had longer conversations with, such a variety of people out enjoying this incredible environment for so many different reasons.

I think I might just be a little bit addicted 😆. I will no doubt post more in the coming days, this is only a small selection of the many photos I took, but for now it’s a massive thank you to everyone who makes this possible 🙏

Proper multi craft, multi activity adventure today! Beautiful weather, excellent company and halloumi, what more could you ask for!

Wait, some fantastic nudibranch (sea slug) eggs , we even saw the mum this time, I was disappointed it just looked a bit like a slug 😔 some of them are amazingly beautiful! But a great find nonetheless @ahall_marine

We were also reminded why it’s really important to make sure you are aware of the conditions, make good decisions, bring the right equipment etc. On the way back Lee thought he heard some shouting and when we looked behind us we saw some people on paddle boards clearly signalling for help. Luckily Lee heard them and I was able to go and assist them towards the shore until the @rnli arrived to take them back to their starting point.

It’s so easy to get blown out in an offshore wind which is what had happened to them, with no means of communication and no equipment they were at the mercy of the wind and tide. Today they were lucky and grateful for the help but pretty scared. Please make sure you understand the risks, if you don’t think there are any you probably just don’t recognise them. If in doubt get some training

Today has been a beach day 😁☀️🌊🐟! Rockpooling, chilling on the beach, swimming and getting sand between my toes!

Saw so many excellent things including
👉my second ever live cowrie shell 😯
👉the cutest broad clawed porcelain crab that would not let go of my ring 🤣
👉a species of seaweed I’ve never seen before, amazing blue/green colour under the water! Can’t wait for @ahall_marine to give me the full low down
👉 loads of kelp due to the really low tide
👉 plenty of fish and crabs hiding under rocks to protect themselves from the ☀️

Excellent day two on the bespoke navigation course today. I couldn’t be more delighted when asked ‘Any chance we could also have a dip while learning to navigate?’…. Of course! 🥾🏊‍♀️🤩

Even better when we then used this fantastic secluded spot as a great test of all the navigation skills learnt up to this point. This is one you can’t see until you are top of it. Several boggy bits meant plenty of opportunity for relocation but we got there in the end and the navigation was on point.

I love this spot and don’t think I’ve seen the waterfall looking so good before 😍. We even managed to squeeze in a quick visit to Dirtsworthy Warren House on the way home. Did you know it was used in the filming of War Horse?!?

Fantastic couple of days, plenty of skills to take away and practice and no doubt more adventures to have!

Sometimes things don’t go to plan. Today I wanted to get out on my paddleboard and prove to myself that my tricep injury is fine, totally healed and I can paddle for miles, like usual. Unfortunately this isn’t the case, yes I can paddle but listening to my body I could tell that paddling against the reasonable wind today was not going to promote the healing that, unfortunately, I still need to do 😔

That said, it was beautiful on the water and so I decided to go to the nearest beach, have some tea and relax in the sun with a beautiful view. I love sea glass, I have tonnes of the stuff but today I didn’t just collect it, I played with it! Play is so important and something that as adults we don’t do enough of. Today I played on the beach and it was wonderful 🥰

There are always glimmers to be found, sometimes we’ve just gotta look for them, be patient and grateful for the ones that turn up.

Fantastic Wild Swimming Walk today, I love how different every walk is, today we climbed Leather Tor for fantastic views of Burrator reservoir at the end of the walk, this was definitely a high, both metaphorically and actually.

It’s such a privilege to be able to watch the moor ‘wake up’ in spring. The leat was gorgeous, if you’ve not come across them leats are man made watercourses, we have a few on the moor. Leats are excellent for spotting small fish and the pondweed is looking beautiful in the sun at the moment. We’ve also been admiring the lichens, a great sign of how pure the air is.

Crazywell pool was, as always, fantastic, we did a few lengths before enjoying lunch and a hot drink to warm up. This pool is 100 meters long so great for a longer swim but also suitable for a quick dip, the sandy gently sloping entry gives you plenty of time to get used to the cold water, freshwater is always slightly cooler than seawater at this time of year!

It’s such a privilege to be able to watch the moor ‘wake up’ in spring. The leat was gorgeous, if you’ve not come across them leats are man made watercourses, we have a few on the moor. Leats are excellent for spotting small fish and the pondweed is looking beautiful in the sun at the moment. We’ve also been admiring the lichens, a great sign of how pure the air is.

Crazywell pool was, as always, fantastic, we did a few lengths before enjoying lunch and a hot drink to warm up. This pool is 100 meters long so great for a longer swim but also suitable for a quick dip, the sandy gently sloping entry gives you plenty of time to get used to the cold water, freshwater is always slightly cooler than seawater at this time of year!

We all need a break and I’ve just had an amazing one with an old friend! An amazing night at the @bedruthanhotel making the most of the excellent spa facilities, eating delicious food and mainly watching the surfers on the beach!

The sauna even had views of the beach, I’m not sure it gets better. I couldn’t resist’s a little walk on the coast path after some serious relaxing and the swim the outdoor pool after this felt very well deserved! The @southwestcoastpath in this area is just stunning and at this time of year the smell of coconut from the gorse is a real bonus.

When not walking or swimming you’ll be staying in the relaxing surroundings of Haye Cornwall where you will get to meet Kate and Phil’s rescue animals, discover how they are cared for & learn about land regeneration projects. The weekend is fully catered with delicious homemade vegan food. This holistic wellbeing retreat is perfect for those who want to get away from the hustle & bustle, spend time in the great outdoors & leave feeling relaxed and refreshed.

Some look insignificant until just a few moments before they hit and they suddenly bank up causing you to need to jump higher and with more force than anticipated. The moments in between give us the chance to recover our feet and maybe have a quick dip below the waterline before the next one arrives and demand we just back into action.

The sea never fails to renew and refresh me, no day or swim is ever the same but there’s a consistency in it’s ability to remind me of who I am each time I put my body in it.

What an amazing two days we had for this week’s Navigation Skills Course! The beautiful weather gave us an excellent learning environment. We covered many different skills including orientating the map, handrail navigation, navigation using the compass, contour interpretation and much more! We practiced the skills individually and then put it all together so that by the end the candidates could work out which navigation skills would best suit each situation.

There was plenty of time for practice and some useful discussions about safety. Both candidates left excited to put their skills into practice and explore more areas off the path!

Excellent time at the Lost gardens of Heligan @heligangardens for locals week! Would really recommend this if you’ve not been. Such an amazing story and such a beautiful peaceful place to explore. The kitchen garden is the thing of my dreams and I’m obsessed with the greenhouses!

Excellent morning exploring the rock pools on the beach! With the low spring tides there was so much diversity and I even got to top up my knowledge with the excellent @ahall_marine who patiently answered my many questions!

Particularly loved the jewel anemone, not sure I’ve seen one of these before, so beautiful. Also loads of dog whelk eggs ready to hatch!

Excellent morning exploring the rock pools on the beach! With the low spring tides there was so much diversity and I even got to top up my knowledge with the excellent @ahall_marine who patiently answered my many questions!

Lots of exposed Kelp and other intertidal creatures, all looking stunning with the sun sparking. Loads of birds, seagulls eating starfish (and fighting over them), cormorants, oyster catchers and many of smaller birds exploring the exposed rocks for their next meal!

There was a beautiful seal 🦭 hauled out at the end of the breakwater, the wide berth I gave it meant I couldn’t get any good photos but I’m pleased it was left undisturbed. Did you know seals can really damage themselves if they get scared and get back in the water when they are hauled out? That’s why it’s really important to give them loads of space.

I can’t express how good this felt yesterday! There has been a lot of rain and the main river was just too dangerous, even this little brook was in places moving very quickly! So it took a while to find the right spot, but when I did, wow! The bit you can’t see in the video was the view, it was like sitting in a spa, with the water pummelling my shoulders but….with the most stunning view and the sound of birds signing all around me! ☺️

Tavy Cleave is one of the most dramatic valleys on the northern part of Dartmoor, overlooked by several imposing tors it feels like another world. While there are several appealing pools as you walk up or down the valley this walk will take up to one of the largest and deepest, with a beautiful waterfall at the top.

The walk itself initially follows a beautiful leat (manmade watercourse) surrounded by wildflowers at the right time of year and often teaming with small forest, pond skaters and dragonflies! The leat leads us into the valley of Tavy Cleave itself where we follow a vague path alongside the river to this stunning pool.

Overlooked by several tor we can swim or dip, the choice is yours, in the beautiful clear waters of the river Tavy. Bubbling close to the waterfall and then getting smooth and flat as the pool opens out further downriver.

Sharrah Pool on the River Dart is proving to be one of my most popular Wild Swimming Walks. The pool itself is glorious and for a pool on a river surprisingly big, there is so much diversity, there are shallow bits, deep bits, still bits and lively bits of runny water where you can lie back and let the river take you. There’s a small waterfall at the top and a nice bit of flow to play in!

The part of the Dart valley we walk up to access it is equally stunning. Much of the walk follows the river and there are multiple places you could be drawn to get in! Some sections take us high above the river giving views back down to the following water below as well as across the moor to various tors on Dartmoor. There’s also a small waterfall just off the path on the way there.

This wild swimming walk will leave you feeling relaxed, refreshed and calm. It’s a great introduction to swimming in rivers and there’s plenty of time after the swim to enjoy sitting by the riverside enjoying a snack and a hot drink.

Sharrah Pool on the River Dart is proving to be one of my most popular Wild Swimming Walks. The pool itself is glorious and for a pool on a river surprisingly big, there is so much diversity, there are shallow bits, deep bits, still bits and lively bits of runny water where you can lie back and let the river take you. There’s a small waterfall at the top and a nice bit of flow to play in!

The part of the Dart valley we walk up to access it is equally stunning. Much of the walk follows the river and there are multiple places you could be drawn to get in! Some sections take us high above the river giving views back down to the following water below as well as across the moor to various tors on Dartmoor. There’s also a small waterfall just off the path on the way there.

This wild swimming walk will leave you feeling relaxed, refreshed and calm. It’s a great introduction to swimming in rivers and there’s plenty of time after the swim to enjoy sitting by the riverside enjoying a snack and a hot drink.

So much available right on our door step, this morning we have seen herons, cormorants and loads of oyster catchers (my favourite). Although it’s quiet on the water at the moment, compared to the summer, we did also see a frigate going to sea, several research vessels and other working boats, Plymouth Sound is such a hive of activity!

Ok I know this isn’t every girls idea of fun 🤩, but it is certainly mine 😁 🏊‍♀️🥶. People often ask if I’m crazy when they find me doing this or if I meet them and mention I’m on my way for a swim. This question is often quickly followed by, is it safe?!? And my answer is, it depends!

People don’t always find ‘it depends’ as a satisfying answer, but it’s the truest answer I can give. It depends on so many things, things that can be different from day to day and certainly different from person to person. For me there is so much that goes on in the background before a swim like this. From what I’m wearing, to how I take it off, what else I’m carrying, the preparation I’ve done in advance, where I am and so much more.

I cover some of this in my Introduction to Cold Water swimming course but the reality is I’ve been getting in cold water nearly all my life, I’ve been leading myself and other people in the outdoors for over 20 years and I’ve done a lot of learning from other people along the way. So I can live with ‘it depends’.

It’s always joyous to meet people out and about, several dog walkers, always love to pat a dog, and I also met some people who couldn’t quite believe that the stones in the first picture are actually a natural formation, I even read them an extract from a book I happened to have with me and I don’t think they quite believed it 🤣. Great to see so many people out and enjoying the outdoors. It really does make you feel amazing!

This walk along the South Hams coastpath in Devon leads to the hidden Butcher’s cove, accessible via steps carved in the cliff side and down a path that if you didn’t know it was there you would never find! The views are spectacular and on a clear day you can see all the way to the Eddystone lighthouse. This is proper coastpath walking with plenty of up’s and down’s, you’ll feel like you’ve deserved both your swim and your lunch!

Towards the start of the walk we also have the opportunity to visit the still used but roofless church of St Peter the Poor Fisherman before heading off on the coastpath towards Butcher’s Cove. Part of this walk takes us on Revelatoke Drive, a circular carriage ride created in the 1880’s to take his visitors in so they could take in the spectacular views.

Butcher’s Cove itself is a lovely sandy cove with gentle entry to the water, there’s a small cave you can explore and you can swim round to a second beach. Protected by kelp at its entrance it is often more calm than the surrounding water. This Wild Swimming Walk is available throughout the year with the first one happening on Sunday the 2nd of March.

Grimspound is one of Dartmoor best known prehistoric settlements, there are 24 roundhouses within an enclosure much of which is still viable. I offer a guided walk that not only takes in this fascinating part of Dartmoor but also several of Dartmoor’s Granite Tors giving stunning views of this area deep in the centre of the moor.

Of all the wildlife it’s possible to see on the moor I particularly love seeing the highland cows, as most of the livestock on Dartmoor roam freely you never quite know when they will pop up but when they do pretty special.

These one or two day courses are run by me, a qualified and experienced Mountain Leader, who will take you from the basics to more advanced skills in a relaxed, fun and enjoyable way. There will be plenty of opportunity to practice, ask questions and learn all you need to know to confidently use a map and compass to explore areas both on and away from footpaths.

Course run on Dartmoor. Group sizes are kept small and maps and compasses are provided. We will also discuss equipment and what to do in an emergency.

Crazywell Pool is one of my favourite places for a swim 🏊‍♀️ on Dartmoor, I find myself returning again and again all through the seasons 🍁 🍃 ❄️ ☀️ !

The area around it is also massively interesting which is why I offer two versions of the Crazywell Pool Wild Swimming Walk, a shorter one for those who just want to get to the pool swim and get back and a longer version which takes in more of the stunning local scenery. I try to include Leather Tor Bridge in both as it’s a bit of a gem! The longer version also takes us up high enough to see all the way to Plymouth Sound!

Crazywell Pool itself is almost 100 meters long and very deep in the middle, with shallow water to enter it has something for everyone from dipper to more serious swimmers. It’s seeped in myth and legend and when you get there you’ll see why!

This is one of those walks that offers the opportunity to really immerse yourself in nature, with such varied landscapes the wildlife is also varied and helps us to notice the beauty in the little things. Why not come along for a bit of a reset?

Rame Head and Penlee Point are just two of the stunning highlights on my Rame Head and Penlee Point Circular Wild Swimming Walk. This walk along the Cornish coast has coastline on 3 sides with stunning views of both the Devon and Cornish Coast as well as views out to the Eddystone lighthouse, which sits 14km south of Rame Head.

This is the first available walk this year, join me on Saturday the 15th of Feb, see the website for other dates throughout the year.

Penlee point, the location of one of the two opportunities to Wild Swim, is also the location of a stunning and fascinating grotto which can be explored before taking to the waters for our first swim.

The second swim, for those that want to (there’s never any pressure), is towards the end of the walk off Cawsand beach. The beautiful village of Cawsands is the start and finish point for this walk and is worth an explore while you are there.

What an afternoon 🤩. Dartmoor was stunning, the snow was gorgeous, at times it was quite deep, up to my thighs at one point but mostly just gorgeous. The sky was also doing its thing with some stunning clouds. Can’t quite express how peaceful I feel when I’m out having even a small adventure.

I have never swam in Foggintor Quarry, mainly due to the leeches but I thought I would gamble on it being a bit cold for them today and give it a go! Bracing would be an understatement 🥶 🥶 but incredibly invigorating! It’s dips like this were getting dressed very quickly is so important but also just so worth it. I knew in that moment that I could use the best of what I know to introduce people to some of the places I love. Not only that but I could give people the confidence & help them to develop the skills to be more adventurous themselves.

A little under a year later & you know what? It worked! I now have a website, a business, a new qualification in Open Water Safety, some lovely reviews from some of the amazing people who have joined me on my Wild Swimming Walks & so much enthusiasm, ideas and hope for 2025.

Are you dreaming about longer, warmer days? I know I am at this time of year, while there are some things I love about winter there are definitely days that make me look forward to spring and summer. This year I am particularly excited as it will be the first full year that I will be running my own business, known as Cathy Harshaw Coaching & Guiding.

It was up a mountain in Wales last June that the idea first came to me to combine my love of wild swimming with my 20 years of experience leading groups in the outdoors. So grateful to be back on the water today, stunning morning and great company as always! The rainbows were out in force, as were the birds, buzzards, swans and so many others that while I can’t identity I can certainly enjoy. This is always such a reset.

Wild and windy walk and short New Year’s Day dip on the north Down coast. Views of Scotland between the wintry showers, certainly a walk 🥾 to blow the cobwebs away!

🏊‍♀️ Dip was short as very shallow so more of a slither across some rocks and then a bob in the waves, pleased to have made it out without drawing blood. I know that doesn’t sound very appealing, and it wasn’t but I am compelled to do it anyway and it feels so good 😊

Mainly I like the seaweed blowing in the wind and the clouds in the video, good job as I managed to miss the dip 🤣

Despite the forecast not looking great the Mournes really delivered today! Wasn’t quite sure what to expect when I left this morning but a stunning sunrise was followed by the sight of Slieve Donard poking above the clouds and that was the moment I decided to abandon my original plan and go for the one which looked like it had the best chance of a view. The gamble paid off!

As well as stunning views on the way up and down there was also the odd glimpse from the top when the clouds parted giving a taste of how amazing the view could be on a clear day. An interesting quarry, an icehouse and a few patches of snow also added to the interest. Seeing the other mournes on the way up I can’t wait to get further in and explore some more!

Sometimes you just need a walk on the beach and a dip in the sea! After over 24 hours of travelling due to delays with the ferry and lots of rain this pit stop on an Irish beach was just what I needed! Lovely sunny day but the sea felt especially cold 🥶 today!

Here’s a little video I made last week of my swim in the snow, takes a while for me to appear, that’s the time it took me to get changed once I’d set my phone up, no space here for extra faffing! In, out, warm up quick 🥶!

Wow what a day! So lucky to have been able to head up to Dartmoor today to investigate the snow for myself and get the first really cold swim of the year in! Luckily my new @batoko Narwhal swimsuit arrived first thing this morning, it’s now christened in Crazywell Pool!

This continues to be one of my favourite areas of the moor and the snow just makes it all the more magical! Today’s it was just so still and serene, after a short snow shower when I first got out the sky cleared and it was blue sky and dripping snow for the rest of the day.
